A Multi-media Performance Piece

"The Healing Circle" was a performance piece that wove together dance, live multicultural music, video art, and spoken text to tell the story of one woman's journey from sexual assault to healing.  I wrote it after Standing Rock Cultural Arts asked me to come up with a way to use the arts to assist sexual assault survivors.  The piece was performed at the Kiva (Kent State University Student Center) on April 2, 2005.

  Project Description

"The Healing Circle" was a fund raiser for Townhall II and a performance that advocated for sexual assault survivors.  It combined one person's personal story with various statistics and other more universal pieces of information.  The goal was to share the information in both a personal and a universal voice.

The personal story portrayed in this piece was constructed from true stories that were contributed by sexual survivors.  The performance also included a video collage of artwork by sexual assault survivors.

Performers

Melissa Lopez - Choreography, dance, acting, vocals.

Mike Hovancsek - Live music and video art.

Lyrics from "Growing Roots"

(one of the songs in "The Healing Circle")

One month after the bombs fell

tendrils broke through the ground.

And in the ruins that used to be my home

I’m going to lay a garden down.

These scars that cover my body

stay with me everywhere I go.

They form a map of the places that I’ve been

I follow them all the way back home.

(Chorus)

I’ve learned to be strong.

I think I’ll grow roots.

You know it’s been such a long day.

I think I’ll grow roots.

This grief is broken to me

it won’t hold anger anymore.

I turn slowly in the healing circle

a portrait of shadows on the floor.

This healing is bigger than my body;

Bigger than the brightest summer sky;

A path that winds through eons of history

right here where my garden lies.

(Chorus)
